Member Spotlight: Daisy Orrell

We’ve asked members of the Fashion in Leeds network to tell us more about who they are. This week, we spoke to Daisy Orrell, fashion marketer and street style photographer.

Who are you, and what do you do?

I’m Daisy Orrell, 23, living in Leeds and I am a full time fashion marketer, part time street style photographer with my @northerngrrls project and less frequently a blogger/freelance journalist.

Who, or what, inspires you?

I pull inspiration from everywhere but films especially really tickle my sartorial fancy – I’m a total cinephile and I find films so rich in imagery and creativity. My current obsession is Natalie Portman’s character Matilda from Léon: The Professional (if you can’t already tell from my haircut). My other main source of inspiration is the women I see around me, whether that is on the streets of Leeds or women I follow on social media. This is mainly what inspired me to start my street style Instagram @northerngrrls. I got really fed up of the London-centric Chloe-bag-and-camel-coat blogger vibe being pushed in the media as ‘street style’ when I could see so many women around me doing such creative things with fashion, so I vowed to go out and photograph as many of them as I could! The name is a homage to my home in the North and the ‘Riot Grrl’ feminist movement of the 90s.

Favourite shops or brands?

I love having clothes that are unique so I do a lot of shopping in charity shops, on ebay and from smaller independent designers. I’m also trying to be a bit more ethical with my choices so these are all great ways of not buying into fast fashion. However, with that being said (here’s where I turn into Gok Wan circa 2007), I do have a long standing love affair with The Great British High Street. I’m not sure if that needed all caps but it just felt right. I’m not really too much of an online shopper and a physical shop, whether it’s Primark or Whistles, gives me such a thrill. It’s a serious addiction remedied by lots of after-work window shopping sessions, pawing at clothes I’m almost certainly not going to buy (not yet anyway).

Who would you love to collaborate with?

I’m a bit of a pop culture fanatic so I could probably give a list as long as my arm of people I would love to interview or style but at the moment my dream collaboration would be with the cast of Ru Paul’s Drag Race. I am OBSESSED with the artfulness and innovation that goes into being a drag queen, plus it would probably be the most fun I’ve had in my life. If I could only pick a handful to work with my queens of choice would be Bianca Del Rio, Violet Chachki, Katya, Alyssa Edwards, Raja and Trixie Mattel.

Where can we follow you online?

If you fancy you can follow my personal Instagram but most of my professional fashiony stuff goes on at @northerngrrls. If you really want to take a deep dive you can have a little look at my blog wildflowersdl.blogspot.com. It’s a little bit neglected at the moment but there’s some pretty cracking posts from a few years back – ‘Top 10 Sexiest Roman Emperors” might be my pièce de résistance!

Thanks Daisy!
